FAQ

Questions about maritime pay and contracts

Day rate vs. salary, what's included, and how to approach negotiation.

Pay Structure
Is a day rate or monthly salary better?
Day rates often pay more per day worked, especially in offshore support roles, but income stops between assignments. Monthly salaries give more predictable income across a fixed contract length. Which is "better" depends on how reliably you can secure back-to-back contracts.
Why do some listings show both a day rate and a monthly figure?
So candidates can compare consistently — a $250/day role and a $7,500/month role represent roughly the same income, just structured differently.
Do maritime salaries vary a lot by flag state?
Yes — flag state affects minimum wage requirements, union coverage, and tax treatment, which can shift take-home pay meaningfully for the same nominal salary.
Benefits & Bonuses
Are accommodation and meals included in maritime pay?
Yes, almost universally — room and board aboard the vessel are part of the standard package for seagoing contracts, not a separate negotiation point.
What bonuses are common in maritime contracts?
Completion bonuses for finishing a full contract term, mobilization bonuses for joining on short notice, and occasionally referral bonuses for bringing in qualified crew are all common, particularly in offshore roles.
Who pays for flights to and from the vessel?
Most companies cover travel to the joining port and home again at the end of contract — confirm this explicitly before signing, as practices vary by employer.
Negotiation
Can I negotiate the rate on a maritime job offer?
Yes, particularly for officer and engineer roles. Citing current market rates for the region, rank and vessel type is a reasonable opening position, especially if you hold additional endorsements like DP or tanker certification.
Who covers the cost of certification renewals?
This varies — some employers reimburse certification renewal costs (especially DP and safety courses) after contract completion. It's worth asking directly rather than assuming either way.
